5 police officers injured in South Street crowds

Five police officers received minor injuries and 17 people were arrested after crowds swelled on South Street late Saturday night, forcing officials to close the corridor to motorists, Philadelphia police spokesman Sgt. Raymond Evers said.

The trouble on South Street was met by extra police prepared to handle chaos similar to incidents involving teenagers that have surprised police in the last two months.

South Street, a busy party strip, was doing a brisk business this weekend while the annual Greek Picnic celebration was unfolding. About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, police noticed the South Street crowd growing with a large number of teenagers arriving from surrounding neighborhoods.

Evers said police were prepared and traffic was closed to motorists at 12th Street as police began clearing the area and pedestrians spilled into the street.

By night's end, eight people were charged with disorderly conduct, four were charged with obstructing the highway, and five were arrested for assaults on police, Evers said.

A sergeant and four officers were treated for injuries, none of them major, Evers said.

In May, police were overwhelmed by marauding teenagers who flooded South Street for an impromptu gathering instigated through online social networks, where word of a party spreads quickly via cell phones.

Since then, police have been monitoring Web sites and deploying extra patrols to keep the area under control. In years past, South Street has turned wild during the Greek Picnic celebration, which attracts fraternity and sorority members from outside the area.

Organizers of the event have since scaled back the picnic, and Evers said it appeared Saturday's problems were not related to the annual event.

According to internet reports Jordy Chandler, now 29, has admitted he lied under duress when he was just 13, acting on the instructions of his father, dentist, Evan Chandler.

At the time the accusations were made in 1993, many Jackson supporters suspected an extortion plot, but the case never made it to trial after Jackson agreed to settle out of court.

But now, in the wake of the 50-year-old legend's death Jordan has allegedly spoke out to reveal the truth.

The now young man says that his biggest regret was not seeking out Michael Jackson and begging him for his forgiveness. “Now I will never be able to tell him just how truly sorry I am, I was young and just doing what I was told.” Evan realizes how much he destroyed Michael and he would do anything to take back some of the pain that his father caused.

Jacob Arabov has forfeited $2 million dollars in illegal proceeds, as a part of his plea agreement conviction for laundering the drug profits of a nationwide drug conspiracy network.

Arabov, known affectionately to Hip-Hop stars as “Jacob the Jeweler,” was sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison for lying to federal authorities about the ownership of $5 million worth of jewelry seized from Terry Flenory, co-head of the notorious Black Mafia Family that operated throughout the United States from 1990-2005.

Under law, drug forfeiture money appropriated by authorities can only be disbursed and used by law enforcement agencies.

Of the $2 million seized, $1.6 million was distributed to seven law enforcement agencies in and around Detroit, the Black Mafia Family’s original base of operations.

The Detroit, Groose Ile Township, Birmingham, and Livonia police departments received $267, 200, with the same amount going to the Livingston County Sheriff’s office.

The River Rouge Police Department received $198,800, while the Waterford Police Department retained $67,200.

The remaining $400,000 was kept by the federal government.

The Black Mafia Family was founded by the Flenory brothers Demetrius (“Meech”) and Terry (“Southwest P”) in the early 90s.

Their vast criminal empire drew extensive police attention when the group began publicly promoting themselves in Hip-Hop circles throughout Atlanta (Young Jeezy, Bleu DaVinci): throwing lavish parties, creating DVDs, and even erecting a prominent Billboard in the city.

Arraignment tomorrow for woman held in Piazza killings

The woman accused of helping orchestrate the shootings of Rian Thal and Timothy Gilmore in the Piazza at Schmidts last month is expected to be arraigned tomorrow.

Police yesterday continued their search for the man believed to be behind the plot, a drug dealer who allegedly convinced girlfriend Katoya Jones to help him rob Thal.

"We know who we're looking for," said Police Capt. James Clark yesterday.

Jones, 25, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder, conspiracy, and related crimes.

Police said Jones, who lives five floors down from Thal's seventh-floor apartment in the Piazza's Navona building in Northern Liberties, let the gunmen and the lookout man into the lobby about a half-hour before the June 27 killings.

Thal, 34, who worked as a party planner at several city nightclubs, also stored drugs for people in her home, according to one law enforcement source. Police found four kilograms of cocaine and more than $100,000 in cash in Thal's apartment after she was killed.

Gilmore, 40, of Ohio, is believed to have been a drug associate of Thal's. Gilmore used his trucking business as a drug front, one law enforcement source said, often dropping off his legitimate cargo before coming to Philadelphia with a supply of drugs.

The dealer who is being sought by police knew Thal had drugs and likely sent the four men into Thal's building to rob her, investigators have said.

The attack, including the stakeout of Thal's apartment, was captured on multiple security cameras. Those cameras recorded Jones as she walked into the lobby, followed by one of the gunmen. Later, that man let in several others, and three men waited near Thal's apartment until she and Gilmore returned to the building.

Three men cornered Thal and Gilmore in the hall, and after a few words were exchanged the men opened fire, shooting Thal and then Gilmore. They left without taking anything, and police have not been able to identify them.

Police would like to talk to an associate of Gilmore's who was inside Thal's apartment when the killings took place. Cameras recorded him as he left afterward, taking with him a large duffel bag that police suspect was filled with drugs.

Police began interviewing Jones after they saw her on the security cameras, Clark said. Eventually, he said, Jones admitted she was involved.

Now an Asylum artist, onetime Timbaland artist Ginuwine returned with a Top 10 debut release with A Man's Thoughts. The work, Ginuwine's first in four years features Timbo, Missy and Bun B.

After the BET Awards on Sunday, rumors started that Jay-Z refused to perform if Chris Brown also hit the stage and now rappers are reacting. Skull Gang leader Juelz Santana weighed in on the situation "i take nothin away from Jay-Z," he wrote on his Twitter. "i dont wanna sound like a Hater but his swagger was on Zero yesterday. & i just heard thru the grape vine that Jay-Z said he would not Perform if Chris Brown was gonna perform.. SMH Sucker Move I woulda rather seen Chris Brown come out & do his tribute to [Michael Jackson]. It woulda been the 1st time he Performed since ? I know he woulda Killed it."

Juelz went on to further bath Jigga. "ok Tweople. Yall do the Math. MJ just died the show as a Tribute to MJ. so not only does he say he down want chris to perform & do what would of been probably the best MJ tribute, but he coulda atleast did H-to tha IZOO cuz it has the MJ beat and Put MJ's name in it."
